Diving at Leigh Harbour

Thursday the 11th of Feb saw us head up to Leigh to dive around the Harbour. Louise myself and Olly from Global dive made our way up the coast to try another of our local dive site options.

At about an hours travel time from Auckland this site is well within the grasp of a day trip and looking at the tides will get you a little more depth. The site runs to about 8m as you move away from the rocks but we stuck in the 5-7m range as there was plenty of weeds and rocky crevices to inspect.

The aim of the dive was to allow Louise the chance to look for Macro species that are often disregarded on a dive and that can be prevalent in these kind of areas. On our hit list was Seahorse, Nudis and anything else wee.

We decided the best way to run this would be to use a primary reel to create a profile for the dive. This also allowed us to probe in the weeds for specimens whilst Louise got stuck into taking pictures. Guaranteeing we were all on the same path and no one became separated in what was not the greatest Vis! The third team member was running a marker.

Unfortunately no Seahorse this time but we shall persevere. Plenty of other critters though.

The other great thing about this site is that its is straight off the rocks and therefore no sand to work its way into the finer points of your kit. You can also park really close to the exit/entry point so a really easy access. The downside is that there is regular boat traffic so make sure you have a marker up to indicate your presence to other harbour users.

All in all a really nice dive. We will definitely be going back to inspect what other life lives in close proximity to with us on a day to day basis.
